Weekly Covid-19 report

Weekly Covid-19 report

The number of new COVID-19 cases in Central Bedfordshire (in the week ending 5 May) was 59, up 7 from the previous week (52). The number of weekly positive cases per 100,000 population has gone up to 20.4 from 18 last week.

Vaccination continues – 148,736 adults have been vaccinated with at least one dose, with 3,312 receiving one in the last 7 days. 47,882 people have now had their second dose. There was one death in our area in the last reporting week, the same as the previous week.

The latest data from our neighbouring areas are as follows:

  • Milton Keynes – 35 new cases (13 cases per 100,000). 4,872 vaccinated (last 7 days) and 1 death reported
  • Luton – 85 cases (39.9 per 100,000). 2,545 vaccinated, with 2 deaths recorded
  • Bedford – 69 new cases (39.8 per 100,000). 2,149 vaccinated and 1 death reported

Last week saw a small rise in cases here which is a reminder of the need to remain vigilant and to observe the guidance on handwashing, face coverings and social distancing, especially as restrictions are eased and we meet up with friends and family again.

Vaccination continues at pace and we are now able to report on the number of people receiving their second dose which shows that almost a fifth of our adult population has now been fully vaccinated.

Vaccines are vital in helping us return to a normal way of life. Not only do vaccines reduce the severity of illness and prevent hundreds of deaths every day, we now see they also have an additional impact on reducing the chance of passing COVID-19 on to others.

When you are offered a vaccine, take it as soon as possible.

But even if you have been vaccinated, it is really important that you continue to act like you have the virus, practise good hand hygiene and follow social distancing guidance.

Remember – Hands. Face. Space. Fresh Air.
